There is a cool saying by Dr.Seuss “Today you are You, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is youer than you!” A lot of people mistake my brother and I. They think I’m him and they think he’s me or we are twins. We’ve gotten used to it and quickly correct the person and tell them who we are. As much as we may look the same, sound the same, and like similar things, we are very different.
When you wake up in the morning, and wipe the sleep from your eyes (if you were a teenager in the early 2000s, I bet you are thinking about Craig Davids silly lyrics -wipe the sleep from my eyes haha). Anyway, who is that person before you put on your work clothes and get ready for another day out there? It is easy to learn what is acceptable in the work environment and repeat these behaviours every day. You are expected to fill a professional role and you will get paid to do this as long as you follow the rules and get your work done. You conform to the culture of the environment you work in. But when are you YOU?
You might claim that you are always YOU, but how much of your character is suppressed simply because you are trying to fit in and be “normal”. The demands of life cause you to compromise some of the things that make you YOU.
When there are no pressures of bills to pay or people to please, what makes you happy? If all your expenses were paid up and you had time to just be you, what would YOU look like?
We did an experiment in primary school, where three people were asked to leave the classroom and after they had gone out the teacher told us to say that “B” was the correct answer when actually “A” was obviously the correct answer. When the other students walked back in, she asked us to raise our hands if we thought “A” was the right answer. We did as we were told and kept our hands down. When she asked if “B” was the correct answer, everyone put up their hands including the 3 kids that went outside. When asked later, if they were sure if “B” was the correct answer, they said they thought “A” was correct but it had to be “B” because everyone else said it was “B”.
We are so afraid to be different, that we will agree with everyone else, even if we know they are wrong. If someone offers you tea or coffee, do you ask them what they are having and also have what they have or do you know what you would like and say that instead?
Take some time out of your busy schedule to get in touch with YOU. What makes you tick? what brings you joy? What do you do that only you can do? What talents do you have that are not being utilized? The media influences us to emulate public figures and as a result, we stop being ourselves. When are you YOU?
Even if you believe that you are YOU and are succeeding at whatever you are doing, it will not hurt to reassess where YOU are at the moment. Taking stock regularly will help you tremendously on your journey through life. Sometimes great change is needed and sometimes minor adjustments need to be made. But only YOU know YOU!
Do not fear peoples opinions, Proverbs 29:25 “The fear of man brings a snare, But whoever trusts in and puts his confidence in the Lord will be exalted and safe”
