Day 18 – Proverbs 18

Day 18 – Proverbs 18

“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit” Proverbs 18:21

Have you ever said, “I am feeling sick” and then you start to feel ill. Or “I have a terrible memory”, and you can’t remember anything. Perhaps the words we are confessing could be the reason.

Words carry power. It is with words that we can either lift up or pull down. We need to pay special attention to the things we say because once they leave our mouths, they cant come back.

Having wisdom is very important when we speak because the tongue is a powerful tool. It is like a rudder of a ship. It is so small and yet it controls the direction the ship takes. We can either use the tongue to bless or to curse.

Relationships are based on communication. When couples choose to speak negatively about each other, their relationship struggles. Husbands complain to their friends about their nagging wife and wives complain to their friends about their lazy husband. When you confess that she is a “nag”, she will remain a nag because those are the words you spoke. If you declare that she is “loving and kind” what do you suppose she will become?

Even jokes have the ability to lift up or pull down. “Like a madman who throws firebrands, arrows and death, is the man who deceives his neighbour and says, I was only joking” Proverbs 26:19. We should be very careful about joking about someone being stupid, lazy, good for nothing, naughty and so on. We must be mindful of the jokes we make because it is possible to disguise “arrows of death” in jokes even without us noticing.

By confessing (speaking out), we are able to shape our destiny. We must learn to declare life over ourselves and those around us. We must continually speak positively over the things we do and the conversations we have because our words can either bring “death or life”. Lets choose LIFE!

Lets pray…

Father, in the beginning You spoke and it came in to being. We have been created in Your image and we believe that we have power in the words we speak. We understand that death and life are in the power of the tongue. Help us to speak life in to our situations. Be it in our jobs, our families, our children and our nation. Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight. We choose to speak positively about ourselves and our family and friends. Forgive us for all the negative things we have spoken, even if we were only joking. Cause us to speak in wisdom at all times.

In Jesus name…

Amen
