Day 31 – Proverbs 31
“Who can find a virtuous wife? For her worth is far above rubies” Proverbs 31:10
Chick flicks portray a very unrealistic expectation of relationships, love and marriage. Its all about the chemistry and meeting Mr Right. The fairy-tale ending is not how it works in real life and things don’t automatically turn out as perfectly as they do in movies.
The modern day bride is unconcerned about life skills and does not know what to do in her marriage. All she is concerned about is looking good on her wedding day and having everything she wants. Its great to celebrate the special day but there has got to be a greater purpose that goes beyond that. “Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing, but a woman who fears the Lord shall be praised” Proverbs 31:30. Much preparation is needed for a young woman before she gets married. The points in Proverbs 31 mention so many life skills and values that the woman possessed. She could cook, knit, farm, trade, exercise, give to the poor, dress well, speak well, had confidence, saw to the needs of her husband and children, was not lazy. This was no accident. She was brought up by parents who taught her these impeccable values. The worth of these lessons is far more important than a fancy wedding day. “Her worth is far above rubies” verse 10.
Men too, need preparation. Before marriage, the man must establish himself and show some credibility to the girls parents. “Her husband is known in the gates, when he sits among the elders of the land” Proverbs 31:23 If he is to take the girl as his wife, the parents must be confident that he has his head screwed on and is capable to love, protect and provide for their daughter and the children that follow.
It is up to PARENTS to develop young children to become VIRTUOUS MEN and WOMEN. Preparation for marriage starts the moment a child is born. Children get to see and learn how to behave within a marriage by the way their parents behave. If parents display Love, Respect, Forgiveness, Good Communication, Support and Generosity, then these are the traits that will get ingrained in them from a young age . “Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not depart from it” Proverbs 22:6
Heavenly Father, thank you for the covenant of marriage. We ask that you give every married couple the wisdom to lead godly lives and empower their children with valuable life skills so when they get older, they will be prepared for a successful marriage. Help us not to be concerned about outward appearances but rather the inward state of our hearts and the fear of the Lord, which is the beginning of Wisdom.
In Jesus name…
